Switzerland requires drivers to have a vignette to access its motorway network. There are two main types of Swiss vignettes: the traditional sticker vignette and the digital e-vignette.
What are the types of Swiss vignettes?
Switzerland offers two main types of vignettes for vehicles: the sticker vignette and the e-vignette. Both types allow drivers to use the extensive Swiss motorway network. The main differences between them lie in their format and the purchase method.
Sticker vignette
This traditional vignette is a physical toll sticker that needs to be affixed to the vehicle's windshield. Introduced in 1985, the sticker vignette has been used by countless drivers over the years. It is available at numerous physical locations such as post offices, gas stations, and border crossings. The sticker is valid for 14 months, from December 1 of the preceding year to January 31 of the following year, which provides some flexibility for travelers who visit Switzerland early or late in the year.
E-vignette
The e-vignette, introduced in August 2023, offers a modern, convenient alternative to the sticker vignette. It is digitally linked to the vehicle's license plate, meaning there's no need to affix anything to the car physically. This type can be purchased online from anywhere in the world through the website. The e-vignette is particularly advantageous for travelers who frequently switch vehicles or use interchangeable plates, as it can be transferred between vehicles, and the registration plate remains the same.
Benefits and drawbacks of each Swiss vignette type

Sticker vignette

  • Cons: One of the downsides of the sticker vignette is that it must be physically affixed and removed, which can be inconvenient. In addition, if the windshield breaks, the sticker becomes unusable, and a new one must be purchased.
E-vignette
  • Pros: The e-vignette is highly convenient since it can be bought and activated online. It is linked to the vehicle registration number, making it easier for drivers who switch or use a shared vehicle. The digital format also means there is no need to worry about affixing or removing a sticker, and it can be purchased from anywhere, avoiding unnecessary stops at physical sales points.
  • Cons: The e-vignette cannot be automatically renewed, so drivers must remember to repurchase it each year. Additionally, there is no physical receipt unless requested electronically, which may be a drawback for some users.
